Electric bike section including OHM, eZeebike, EcoBikes and Sanyo Eneloop electric bike

Electric bikes are for the most part bicycles with a motor, charger, speed controller and lithium battery. The electric bicycle is not intended to be a motorcycle or moped but rather an assisted bicycle that is easier to pedal and more fun to ride than a non- powered bike. (although if need be, on selected models you can ride without pedaling up to the legal speed limit of 20mph.)

Our electric bicycle selection includes the electric powered Ecobikes, the OHM bikes from Canada, Sanyo Eneloop electric bicycle and the high performance line of eZee bikes.

Folding bike selection including Brompton, Dahon, Xootr Swift and Strida Folding bikes are designed for portability and ease of use. The folding bicycle is popular with commuters, for airplanes, boating and RVs. Here in New York City, much like in any place with limited space, fold-up bikes make a ton of sense and are therefore our best selling product.

Breaking in a Brooks Saddle: A Testimonial

Getting my first Brooks Saddle was quite an experience. I knew the new, hardened leather would have a rough “break-in” period that I’d have to get through before I reached the comfortable, contoured feeling I wanted. After six months, I’m riding on the most comfortable saddle I’ve ever owned.

Brooks leather saddles come in many different models, from wide touring models, to narrow sporty models. Check out our selection of Brooks saddles, as well as other cool Brooks gear.

First Time Installing a BionX Kit

You don’t have to be too bike savvy to install a BionX kit. The whole process only has 3 major steps. Peter took a Dahon Matrix and BionX 350 down into the basement and emerged with one cool folding BionX bike. There were some snags, nothing too bad, but in the end the whole process was pretty smooth.

BionX sent one of their electric motor wizards all the way from Canada to train him on the common problems encountered when installing a BionX kit. It took a bit of time and careful adjustments to get everything perfect, but we get the impression anyone with a bit of patience can install a BionX kit on their bike.

Pedelec Electric Bikes

We’ve been using the term pedelec quite liberally for the last few years, and if you’re unfamiliar with electric bikes, this can be quite a puzzling word. We have ebikes, pedelec bikes, and pedal-activated bikes, so what is the difference?

An article published by German electric bike company Extra Energy a few years ago broke down the term Pedelec and its integration into our vocabulary. It’s a great overview, and probably more information than you would ever need to know about one single word.

Electric Motorized Bikes

Peter rode some of our motorized bikes here in the shop and wrote about his experiences. Coming into the world of electric bikes without any prior knowledge, it’s easy to see how you can confuse them with other motorized bicycles.

With some miles on an electric motorized bike, Peter was able to distinguish the difference between electric power and other types of fuel. Needless to say, the electrics were much more practical.

Gear Hubs on a Brompton Folding Bike

You can get a Brompton folding bike in a number of gearing options. Picking the right gearing is important but can be confusing when encountering terms like derailleur and internal gear hub. There really isn’t anything so complex about these systems and in fact, you probably already know more than you think about each one. When it comes to gearing, we get more questions about internal gear hubs than anything else (probably because they are such a subtle yet powerful invention).

Brompton uses Sturmey-Archer 3 speed hubs for their 3 speed folding bikes and a combination of a wide range version of the same hub and a 2 speed derailleur for their 6 speed bikes. This clever solution allows the Brompton to remain compact even when adding additional gears, something which would normally require a longer rear axle. Read more about internal gear hubs offered by Brompton.
